The Rood Screen at Venice's "Frari" Church: Detail, The Prophet Elisha

1475
Marble

Like the other panels, this one uses a banderole to identify the figure rather than an attribute. The ꝒP in the banderole is an abbreviation for "Propheta." Elisha was chosen by Elijah to be his successor. In this image, his eyes and his index finger are raised heavenward, probably in reference to his reaction when Elijah was taken from him in a fiery chariot: "My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the driver thereof" (2 Kings 2:12).
